EDUCATOR OF THE MOMENT

According to a news report, a private school in Washington was faced with a unique problem. A number of pre-teen girls were beginning to put on lipstick in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put it on, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the janitor would remove them; the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the janitor. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the janitor to show the girls how much effort was required.  He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers, and then there are educators.

PUN OF THE MOMENT

I went to the butcher's the other day and I bet him 50 bucks that he couldn't reach the meat off the top shelf. He said, "No, the steaks are too high."

POSITIVE ATTITUDE IN DIFFICULT MOMENTS

Like me, I’m sure you’ve been shocked and saddened by the devastation of the recent hurricanes and natural disasters and tragedies. In my keynotes and workshops I often talk to my audiences about how laughter, humor and one’s positive attitude can help themselves and others around them cope with difficult situations and crisis.

Two examples vividly illustrated this for me recently once again. A crippled Jet Blue plane was desperately circling the LA airport to use up fuel to hopefully avoid a crash landing. Petrified passengers watched live news coverage of themselves on TVs on the plane discussing their own possible demise in a few minutes. A frightened young gentleman passenger, long-known for his fear of flying, mustered up a smile and joked to his girlfriend as he videotaped himself in a possible last goodbye.

Just days after Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, a lone man waded to a tiny dry corner in a flooded, dreary city. Then amidst the utter devastation, tons of debris, fallen trees, power lines, disgusting stench and rotting garbage, he put a trumpet to his lips and played a merry jazz tune at the top of his lungs. As I listened to the upbeat music wafting over the rubble and watched mesmerized on my TV screen, I realized the spirit of New Orleans and a positive attitude was indeed rising above the dirty flood waters.

How would WE have reacted in these circumstances? In any difficult situation? Food for thought

A COACHING MOMENT

Has this happened to you? In the past month, several coaching clients reported feeling stressed, burnt out and exhausted in their jobs. They often dislike going into work, want to go home early, feel drained being there. Take a moment to look around you. How is your work environment? Does your mood shift when you walk into your office in the morning? How do you feel sitting at your desk for hours? In that cubicle? Is it stifling? Boring? Cluttered? Filled with negative energy?

After some coaching, several of my clients have tried these tips with great success.  Liven up your workspace! Bring in something of your favorite color. One client who loves red, brought in small statues and a wall hanging, instantly adding a splash of cheerful color and boosted his spirits. Another client enjoys sunny yellow and brightened her office this way, as well as brought in a colorful photo of a place she loved and posted inspirational sayings. Not only did it make her workdays brighter, but she motivated her fellow employees down the hall to do the same.

Shift things around in your office for a new look. Move your furniture, paint your walls, bring in throw pillows, rugs, photos or posters or sentimental knickknacks that add color and elevate your mood. Adjust the blinds to let the sunlight in or eliminate the glaring fluorescents. Another client changed to softer lighting and got rid of piles of paperwork and boxes of clutter. She reported feeling happier and more productive and her employees were abuzz and impressed with the change in her. Green plants add a healthier atmosphere and the sound of a bubbling fountain or soft music will soothe your surroundings. From lighting a aromatic candle to reading humorous jokes on a nearby bulletin board, you’ll be amazed how all this makes it easier to get through the day. Photos of friends bring back fond memories, a bowl of candy, toys, stress balls will make you smile. The Office Playground or Oriental Trading Post in the Joy Shoppe on my site is a good resource for fun novelties or desk toys to keep you going. Simple changes for powerful results! Change the energy in your office and brighten your mood TODAY!

A MIDDLE AGE MOMENT

Middle age is when work is a lot less fun and fun a lot more work.

AN ANNOYING WAKE UP MOMENT

Did you hear about this?! Not sure if you want to rush out and purchase this new invention! Profiled on the news recently, an award was granted to an inventor who created a carpet-covered alarm clock that as soon as the ear-splitting alarm goes off, it jumps off your nightstand, rolls across the floor and quickly hides…leaving you to stumble around in a sleepy stupor to find the #@*& thing! Turn off that racket and rise and shine! Are we laughing yet?

A SPACEY MOMENT

Top joke in Canada:  When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 C. The Russians used a pencil.
